Emam hussain was grandson of prophet (PUBH). His army was defeated on the day of muharram. His army was fighting Yazid. Hussain belonged to the shia sect. Yazid was second caliph of umayyad dynasty. He was sunni.

Shia believe in 12 Imams, who are grandson of prophet. Sunni do not beleive in these 12 imams as religious leaders. They believe that their leaders are Caliphs.
